Peng Liyuan meets Lis Cuesta, wife of Cuba’s president

Peng Liyuan, wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping, met Lis Cuesta, wife of visiting President of Cuba’s Council of State and Council of Ministers Miguel Diaz-Canel at Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing on Tuesday

Peng asked Cuesta to convey President Xi’s sincere greetings to President Diaz-Canel. She said that last November Cuesta accompanied President Diaz-Canel on his successful state visit to China. This visit again less than half a year later fully demonstrates the friendly relations with China and the Chinese people.

The new generation of Cuban leaders, represented by President Diaz-Canel, actively support the initiative of co-building the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and are committed to strengthening all-round cooperation between China and Cuba.

Peng spoke highly of the positive efforts made by Cuesta to promote cultural exchanges between China and Cuba. She said that Cuban culture and art are vibrant and colorful and have long enjoyed a high reputation. It is hoped that the two sides will strengthen exchanges and cooperation in the fields of culture, art, and tourism to bring the two peoples closer together.

Also, Peng introduced her work as a UNESCO special envoy for girls’ and women’s education and WHO goodwill ambassador for tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, and shared China’s successful experience in the field of education and health. She hoped that China and Cuba could strengthen exchanges and cooperation in these fields and jointly contribute to the development and progress of world education and health.

Cuesta asked Peng to convey President Diaz-Canel’s cordial greetings and best wishes to President Xi, saying that the Cuban people love Chinese culture and are full of friendly feelings towards the Chinese people.

Cuesta also said that Cuba admires China’s great achievements over the past 70 years and thanks China’s long-term support and assistance. Cuba, she added, would like to take the opportunity of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties next year to promote cultural exchanges and consolidate the traditional friendship between the two countries.
