Liverpool avoid EFL Cup exclusion for fielding ineligible player

The English Football Association (EFA) have settled for fining Liverpool fielding an ineligible player during their 2-0 win over MK Dons in the Carabao Cup.

Liverpool had secured an expected 2-0 win over Championship side MK Dons in the third round of the EFL Cup.

In the 63rd minute while they were 1-0 up, Jurgen Klopp brought in Spanish youngster Pedro Chirivella for Naby Keita in the 63rd minute.

Chirivella had spent the second half of last season on loan at Spanish second division side Extremadura and returned to England this summer.

However, according to The Athletic, it seems that the Reds hadn’t received the 22-year-old’s international transfer certificate (ITC) even after having requested the FA’s intervention back in July.

According to earlier reports the Reds were in danger of being omitted from the competition over this error but, nonetheless, the EFA decided to hand the 2019 Champions League winners a £200,000 fine, £100,000 from which are suspended.
