Egypt FA calls for meeting with Premier League clubs to solve schedule irregularity

The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has called for an urgent meeting with the Premier League clubs to discuss the ongoing saga over the league’s schedule after a war of words has recently erupted between top clubs.

League leaders Zamalek and runners-up Pyramids FC said they would not play their respective league matches unless title holders Ahly played their re-arranged games, saying that the Red Devils would otherwise enjoy an unfair advantage.

“We called on all the Egyptian Premier League’s teams to attend an urgent meeting on Wednesday to discuss the problem of the postponed games,” EFA spokesman Ahmed Megahed told a news conference on Saturday following an urgent board meeting.

“The league will continue despite the current calls to call off the competition and we will discuss how to avoid the current situation. There is no intention to cancel the league.”

Last week, big-spending club Pyramids FC filed an official complaint with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), asking that the African football governing body take all necessary measures to guarantee the integrity of the Egyptian league and the Egyptian Cup.

Pyramids expressed their displeasure over the “irregularity of the Egyptian League schedule this season, which has seen Pyramids play 20 games while Ahly and Zamalek have played only 16 and 18 games, respectively.”

Both Ahly and Zamalek have had many of the games delayed due to their participation in the CAF Champions League, the Confederation Cup and the Arab Zayed Cup.

The EFA has decided that the delayed games from the first round will be played in the second round, including the Cairo derby between Ahly and Zamalek.

Meanwhile, Zamalek also announced that they won’t play their scheduled games in the league until Ahly play their postponed matches, lending support to Pyramids.

Ahly insisted that they would not accept any changes to the current schedule of fixtures.

Zamalek are leading the league table with 45 points, six ahead of Pyramids FC who played two matches more. Ahly are third on 33 points with four games in hands.
